Innovative Handbuilding Techniques
Lana Wilson

Study with this 'Master' handbuilder and educator and learn unusual construction techniques with soft slabs while creating complicated textures, plates, bowls, and teapots. Lana will also demonstrate how to make a box with a workable drawer, movable doors, and inset niche.  Learn new ways to stamp, make base-relief tiles, and embellish your surfaces by decorating with layered colored slips.  Samples of unique glazes (with formulas) will be available to inspect. Be ready to experiment and get inspired. All Levels

The Art of Raku
Steven Forbes-deSoule

Students will spend the first part of the workshop making forms for raku, either throwing and/or handbuilding.  Wheel demonstrations will include altering techniques, making marks and using a torch to increase size and wall thinness.  Handbuilding demonstrations will primarily focus on slab constuction using bisque molds.  Glazing and raku will be the focus of the latter part of the week with students firing bisque ware brought from home. Intermediate to Advanced

Porcelain Pots for Service

Participants will design and make dinnerware. We will choose various forms and surface treatments while focusing on throwing techniques particular to porcelian. Demonstrations will include non-round forms such as oval and square forms;  different lip treatments for plates and bowls such as squaring, fluting and rolling rims, and slip trailing and stain decoration. Historical as well as contemporary pots will serve to inspire and guide the choices we make. All Levels but throwing experience a must

China Painting: New Directions

In this workshop students will explore methods of applying and firing china paint (using water-soluble mediums exclusively) on ceramic tile, pottery, and sculpture. Create one-of-a-kind results by using different brushes, stamping, printing, spraying, and stenciling with china paints. Investigate resist and wipeout techniques, as well as traditional shading and ground-laying methods. Each student will produce tiles and other ware of their own design. We will also cooperate in the decorating of several collaborative murals.  All Levels

The Misunderstood Extruder

Explore new ways to make functional stoneware using extrusions and slabs. The extruder is a marvelously expressive tool that’s often neglected in the studio or simply misunderstood. It can produce a fresh and direct approach to clay and can foster a very personal aesthetic. This course is not just for handbuilders; it will also interest throwers who want to expand their clay horizons beyond the wheel. All Levels

Japanese Aesthetics

Don't miss this 2 day opportunity to learn from an internationally acclaimed potter! Day 1: John will demonstrate how he makes a broad range of his works from sake cups, facetted cups sake bottles and cold sake servers, through larger pieces including stretch and slab platters, baskets and vases. Day 2: John will trim and assemble the work he started in day one. Slide shows will be shown on both days presenting John's life and work in Japan. All Levels.

We will study general anatomical principles and experiment with gesture and format as generators of content. Gamble’s Low-Fire Clay Adventure
David and Tracy Gamble

This low-fire exploration of clays & glazes is especially beneficial to K-12 Art Teachers. There will be lots of experimentation with underglazes in various forms on wet & bisque clay and tiles.  We’ll create quick and easy sushi plates for further testing with Majolica glazes on different colored base glazes and talk about what happens in your electric kiln when firing. David and Tracy Gamble collaborate with a synergistic style for a fun and enthusiastic hands-on workshop. All Levels

Narrative Ceramics
James Tisdale

In this workshop participants will focus on building a visual vocabulary and developing a voice of expression through the use of personal icons. Students will learn techniques for constructing human and animal forms. These figures will then be used to create narrative sculpture that can express meaning and personal beliefs. We will use low-fire terracotta clay, slips, and glazes to first create a maquette and then expand this into a full-scale sculpture. All levels

July 26-30    

Finding the Beauty in Imperfection
Akira Satake

This workshop will focus on slab construction and 'kohiki' slip techniques for enhancing surface.  By brushing white porcelain slip onto a dark clay body, then stretching the clay to crack and distort a unique look is achieved.  Akira will demonstrate his style of making tea ceremony bowls, ikebana vases and guinomi, all influenced by Japanese woodfired pottery from the Momoyama period of 1568-1615. All Levels.

Costs:

Weeklong Workshops: $425 tuition plus a $50 lab fee. A one time $75 registration fee will be charged per student, not per workshop as we used to do. If you sign up for more than one workshop, there is a 10% tuition discount ($42.50) per workshop

Weekend Demo: $125 tuition plus a $30 non-refundable registration fee
