Students at Piedmont Virginia Community College have been learning and creating pots with our Ellen Buff clay body for more than 15 years.
To conserve energy, Tom Clarkson, the instructor, decided to look for a mid-range clay to replace a traditional Cone 10 brown stoneware with one that would give similar results at Cone 6. He tested many clays before choosing Ellen Buff.
“It fires a nice toasty brown in a mild reduction and glazes fit well,” Tom says. “The clay is very plastic and easy to throw. It is a joy to work with for different hand-building techniques including larger sculptural applications. I also appreciate Highwater Clays’ consistent, good service over the years. Ellen Buff continues to be the clay body of choice at Piedmont Virginia Community College.”
